Am I Covered by NH Medicaid?

NH Medicaid Eligibility

NH Medicaid is a state program administered by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. Your eligibility is determined based on the following main requirements.

  1. Your Income: Your gross income must be below certain limits, which vary based on your eligibility criteria (children, pregnant women, adults ages 19-64, adults ages 65+, individuals with disabilities, and others).

  2. Your Family Size: Unlike some other health insurers, Medicaid eligibility is based on your household family size, not tax filing status. For example, an unmarried couple living together with two biological children count as one family unit (a family of four) under Medicaid, regardless of tax filing arrangements.

  3. Your Resources: Depending on your situation, the state may look at your resources and assets including savings, property, and other valuables to make sure they're below certain limits.

  4. Non-Financial Criteria: You must live in New Hampshire and have proper legal/documentation status, although there are some exceptions for documented pregnant immigrants and immigrant children. Other requirements depend on your circumstances. For example, if you have vision problems, you'll need a doctor to confirm this. If you're an older adult, you'll need to prove your age.

For detailed income limits, resource thresholds, and specific requirements for each Medicaid program, review the NH Bureau of Family Assistance (BFA) Program Fact Sheet on DHHS's website.

Redetermination Process

NH Medicaid usually requires enrollees to renew their coverage every year through a process called redetermination. Your renewal date is based on when you first applied, and you can typically complete this process through your NH Easy portal one month before your renewal deadline. Simply log in and follow the prompts to update your information. NH Medicaid's Open Enrollment period happens every August, which is when you can switch to a different Medicaid plan if desired. Staying on top of your yearly renewal helps ensure your health care coverage continues without interruption. If you have questions, please refer to the resources below.

What Happens if Medicaid Cuts Are Made?

While the federal government and the New Hampshire Legislature are considering changes to Medicaid, NO changes have been made yet. If there are any changes to NH Medicaid programs, NH DHHS has to notify affected Medicaid recipients. This means that if your coverage were to be impacted, you would be contacted by the State. Now is an important opportunity to take action to protect Medicaid and protect your coverage.

NH Medicaid Matters is made up of 80+ organizations who believe that our state's Medicaid program is vital to a healthy, thriving New Hampshire. We are committed to protecting this critical source of essential health insurance for hundreds of thousands of Granite Staters.
